A Harvest That Supports Mothers and Babies
For the past five years, Rural Health Care Initiative (RHCI) has partnered with Growing the Grassroots (GTGR), an organization committed to strengthening farming and increasing the food supply in rural Sierra Leone. Founded by Minnesota resident Calvin Dauner, GTGR provides agricultural education to rural communities.
GTGR currently leases three acres of RHCI farmland donated by the Osborne family in 2012. Its recent sweet potato harvest yielded 1,548 kilograms. RHCI received 25 percent of the harvest—387 kilograms—which will help feed pregnant and postpartum women and staff at our Tikonko and Gondama Birth Waiting Homes.
