Tikonko Chiefdom (akin to a county in the USA) is in the Bo District of Sierra Leone’s Southern Province. Most of the 50,000 Tikonkons are of the Mende ethnic group and live as subsistence farmers. Tikonko Town is the government, economic and religious epicenter.

Treacherous dirt roads and footpaths connect the 50+ villages that are spread over a few hundred square miles. In the villages, water is drawn from wells or rivers, lighting is generated through lamps and candles, and cooking is done over outdoor wood or charcoal burning stoves.

History

Tikonko suffered greatly in Sierra Leone’s Civil War and Ebola Outbreak.

Malnutrition and stunting are common due to widespread food insecurity.
