At RHCI, we are continually inspired by the creativity and generosity of our supporters, who find unique ways to make a difference in Sierra Leone. Recently, two incredible fundraisers showcased the power of community and the impact of giving.
A 50th Anniversary with a Purpose: Gloria and Kerry Kruppstadt
Gloria and Kerry Kruppstadt, former Peace Corps volunteers, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by requesting no cards or gifts, but stated on their invitation that donations to RHCI were welcomed. “We joined the US Peace Corps in 1972, fresh out of the University of Minnesota. We wanted to see the world and chose Sierra Leone as a place to volunteer together.”
Both Gloria and Kerry spent the full two-year tour of duty teaching math in the town of Segbwema, in the Eastern province. In Segbwema, there was a hospital with British doctors who knew a lot about tropical diseases. Gloria went there several times toward the end of service for a mosquito born ailment. When waiting in line, the number one question to the Sierra Leonean women was, “How many children do you have? How many are living? How many dead?” Gloria shares, “This has had a lasting impression so when we heard of RHCI and its efforts, we attended an event and found out about their desire to start a birthing home. We have followed RHCI ever since.”
“Over the years, it has been rewarding to see the home built and a second added, along with the mobile clinics and so on. RHCI is a small organization with a HUGE impact in a small country with big needs. The fact that it was founded by and employs Sierra Leoneans is another reason for us to support the partnership with our beloved Sierra Leone.” explained Kerry. Their anniversary donations amounted to over $850 from family and friends.
Cooking for a Cause: Alicia McHugh’s Big Al’s Kitchen

Big Al’s Kitchen Cooking Class
Alicia McHugh turned her passion for cooking into an impactful fundraiser called Big Al’s Kitchen. Bringing together women for a cooking class, Alicia created a space where participants not only learned new recipes but also gave back to women and children in Sierra Leone. The class fees, paired with a generous match from her husband, Mike McHugh, through his State Farm agency, raised an incredible $2,000 for RHCI.
“Women were inspired to cook with a purpose,” said Alicia. “It was a space to be together, cook, and know that we were empowering women in Sierra Leone.”
This beautiful example of women coming together highlights the power of community and the meaningful ways donors can make a difference.
You Can Make an Impact Too
